What is duplex stainless steel?
Duplex stainless steel is a special stainless steel alloy with a dual phase structure, usually composed of two crystal structures: austenite and ferrite. This composite structure endows duplex stainless steel with excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and stress corrosion resistance.
In duplex stainless steel, the ratio of austenite to ferrite can be adjusted according to the alloy formula and treatment method, thereby achieving ideal material properties. Generally speaking, the content of austenite in duplex stainless steel ranges from 30% to 70%, while the content of ferrite is in the remaining part.
The unique structure of duplex stainless steel provides the following advantages:
1. Balance between strength and toughness:
Compared to other stainless steels, duplex stainless steel has higher strength and toughness.
2. Good stress corrosion resistance:
Duplex stainless steel can effectively resist stress corrosion cracking and is suitable for use in environments that require high strength and corrosion resistance.
3. Excellent corrosion resistance:
Duplex stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance in various corrosive media, including chloride, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, etc.
4. Good welding performance:
Duplex stainless steel is easy to weld and process, making it more flexible in the manufacturing process.
In short, duplex stainless steel is a special alloy that achieves good mechanical and corrosion resistance through the composite structure of austenite and ferrite, making it an important material in many industrial fields.
Application of duplex stainless steel:
1. Oil and Gas Industry:
Commonly used in the manufacturing of petroleum pipelines, oil well casings, valves, connectors, etc., due to their corrosion resistance, high strength, and stress corrosion resistance, they can meet the requirements of harsh environments.
2. Chemical industry:
Used for manufacturing chemical equipment, reactors, containers, etc. It can withstand corrosion from various chemical media and maintain stable performance.
3. Marine engineering:
Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and resistance to seawater erosion, duplex stainless steel is commonly used in the field of marine engineering. For example, manufacturing offshore platforms, ship structures, seawater treatment equipment, etc.
4. Food processing:
Usually used for manufacturing equipment such as presses, conveying systems, and storage containers, due to their excellent safety and corrosion resistance performance for food.
5. Medical equipment:
Used for manufacturing various medical equipment and instruments, such as surgical tools, artificial joints, etc. Its high strength and good corrosion resistance make it a reliable and safe choice.
6. Construction industry:
Commonly used in outdoor structures, bridges, building doors and windows, etc. due to their aesthetics, corrosion resistance, and durability.
In addition to the aforementioned industries, duplex stainless steel is also used in fields such as power industry, shipbuilding, pulp and paper industry, and automotive manufacturing. Its versatility and excellent performance make it an ideal choice for many applications.
Classification of duplex stainless steel:
Duplex stainless steel can be classified based on its chemical composition, structure, and characteristics. The following are several common classifications of duplex stainless steel:
▪ UNS S31803/S32205:
Also known as 2205 stainless steel, it is one of the most common duplex stainless steels. It consists of approximately 40-50% austenite and 50-60% ferrite. It has good corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance and is widely used in fields such as chemical, marine, and petroleum.
▪ UNS S32750/S32760:
These stainless steels are referred to as 2507 or super duplex stainless steels. They have higher strength and better corrosion resistance, making them suitable for more demanding environments such as seawater treatment, chemical storage, and transportation.
▪ UNS S32550:
This duplex stainless steel is also known as Ferralium® 255, with excellent corrosion resistance and stress corrosion resistance. Commonly used on offshore platforms, petrochemical equipment, seawater treatment plants, etc.
▪ SAF 2707 HD ™:
This is a highly alloyed super duplex stainless steel with extremely high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. It is suitable for extreme corrosive environments, such as salt water with high chloride content.
It should be noted that in addition to the common duplex stainless steels listed above, there are other forms and grades of duplex stainless steels. Different manufacturers may use their unique brand names to identify specific duplex stainless steel alloys.
What industrial parts are commonly used in the production of duplex stainless steel?
1. Pipes and fittings:
Duplex stainless steel is commonly used in manufacturing pipeline systems and fittings in industries such as chemical, petroleum, and natural gas. They can withstand high pressure and harsh corrosive environments.
2. Valve and pump body:
Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength, duplex stainless steel is commonly used in the manufacturing of valves and pump bodies to control fluid flow and pressure.
3. Pressure vessels:
In fields such as chemical, petroleum, and marine industries, pressure vessels that require the storage and transportation of high-pressure liquids or gases are usually made of duplex stainless steel. Its stress corrosion resistance and corrosion resistance make it a safe and reliable choice.
4. Various connectors:
Duplex stainless steel is suitable for manufacturing various connectors, such as flanges, elbows, tees, sockets, etc. These connectors typically require high strength and corrosion resistance.
5. Heat exchanger:
Duplex stainless steel can be used to manufacture heat exchange equipment, such as plate heat exchangers, tube heat exchangers, etc. Its excellent corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity make it perform excellently under high temperature and pressure conditions.
6. Structural components of offshore platforms:
Due to the strong corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steel to seawater, it is commonly used in the manufacturing of structural components for offshore platforms, such as piles, supports, and connectors.
In addition, duplex stainless steel can also be applied in the production of food processing equipment, medical devices, automotive components, pulp and paper industries, and other fields. Their use in these fields is mainly based on their advantages in corrosion resistance, strength, and processability.
