What Is Centrifugal Casting?

Centrifugal casting is a method of casting molten metal into a mold that rotates at high speed. It is used to produce cylindrical parts with precise dimensions and uniform internal structures, such as pipes and tubes. The process begins by spinning the mold on an axle supported by bearings while liquid metal is poured in through an opening at the top. As it cools, the centrifugal force pushes the molten metal against the walls of the mold, creating a strong bond between them.
Custom Centrifugal Casting
Centrifugal casting uses a rotating mold to produce custom metal components whose geometry and performance requirements suit the process. Tubes, sleeves, rings, rolls and cylinders are common examples, but they do not define the limit of our product scope. Which Service Conditions Determine the Material and Standard?
Selecting a material for a centrifugal casting requires more than naming a grade. To recommend the right material and specification, we first need to understand four aspects of your application.
Operating Temperature and Thermal Cycling
Provide both the normal operating temperature and the highest metal temperature the casting may reach. Also tell us whether the equipment runs continuously or goes through frequent heating and cooling cycles.
These conditions help determine the required alloy family and heat-treatment condition. For high-temperature austenitic steel pipe, ASTM A451/A451M may be relevant.

Pressure and Mechanical Loading
Temperature alone is not enough when the casting must also withstand internal pressure, external load or rotation. Please provide the design pressure, load direction, rotational speed and any critical load-bearing areas.
For high-alloy centrifugal cast tubing used under pressure at elevated temperatures, ASTM A608/A608M may apply.

Corrosion and Wear Conditions
Tell us whether the component will be exposed to corrosive chemicals, furnace gases, molten metal, abrasive particles or lubricated sliding contact. Include the medium, concentration, temperature and expected wear location whenever available.
For ferritic/austenitic stainless steel pipe used in corrosive environments, ASTM A872/A872M may be relevant. For bronze and other covered copper-base alloy centrifugal castings, ASTM B271/B271M provides a potential specification route.

Material Verification and Acceptance
The purchase specification should define more than the material name. It should also identify the applicable product standard, required heat treatment, mechanical tests, inspection methods, acceptance criteria and supporting documents.
Terms such as "heat-resistant steel," "stainless steel" and "bronze" describe broad material families; they do not form a complete purchasing specification. Centrifugal Casting Inspection Process
The inspection plan for each centrifugal casting is defined by its material, drawing, service conditions and applicable product standard. The scope may include the following four stages.
Material and Traceability Verification
The material grade, heat number and required chemical composition are checked against the purchase specification. Traceability should remain linked to the casting and its inspection records throughout production.
Visual and Dimensional Inspection
The casting is checked for visible surface conditions and required dimensions. Depending on the drawing, inspection may include outside diameter, inside diameter, length, wall thickness, straightness, concentricity, runout and machined interfaces..
Nondestructive Examination
PT, MT, UT or RT may be specified to evaluate relevant surface or internal discontinuities. The appropriate method, inspection area and acceptance criteria depend on the alloy, geometry, service risk and applicable standard.
Mechanical and Metallurgical Testing
When required by the material standard or purchase specification, representative test samples may be used for tensile, impact, hardness or metallographic examination. Test results are reviewed together with the required material and inspection documents before release.
