In the large family of stainless steel, 304 steel and 304L steel are often regarded as "twin brothers". They look similar and are very common in daily life and industrial production, but in fact they are very different in chemical composition, performance and application scenarios. Today, let us explore the difference between 304 steel and 304L steel

The subtle difference in carbon content

Chemical composition is the key factor in determining the performance of steel, and the most obvious difference between 304 steel and 304L steel in chemical composition is reflected in the carbon content. The carbon content of 304 steel can reach up to 0.08%, while the carbon content of 304L steel is strictly controlled at a maximum of 0.03%. Although it is only a difference of 0.05%, it has a profound impact on the performance of steel. Carbon is like a double-edged sword in steel. The right amount of carbon can improve the strength and hardness of steel, but too high a carbon content will reduce the corrosion resistance of steel under certain conditions, especially during welding, which can easily cause intergranular corrosion. 304L steel has a lower carbon content and is naturally more resistant to intergranular corrosion, which also lays the foundation for its application in some special fields.

Other elements and functions

In addition to the difference in carbon content, 304 steel and 304L steel are basically consistent in the content of other major alloying elements, such as chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni). Chromium is the key element that makes stainless steel corrosion-resistant. It forms a dense chromium oxide film on the surface of the steel, preventing oxygen and other corrosive media from further contacting the steel matrix, thereby playing a protective role. The chromium content in both steels is usually around 18%. Nickel can improve the toughness, weldability and corrosion resistance of steel in specific environments. The general nickel content is around 8%. These elements work together to give 304 steel and 304L steel good comprehensive properties, making them widely used stainless steel materials.

Corrosion resistance is an important indicator for measuring the performance of stainless steel. In general atmospheric environments and ordinary corrosive media, 304 steel has a fairly good corrosion resistance due to its own alloy composition, which can meet the use needs of most daily and ordinary industrial scenarios. However, once the welding process is involved, the situation is different. During the welding process, local high temperature will cause the carbon in the steel to form chromium carbide with chromium, resulting in a decrease in the chromium content near the grain boundary, thereby weakening the corrosion resistance of the grain boundary. This is the so-called intergranular corrosion phenomenon. Due to the extremely low carbon content of 304L steel, the amount of chromium carbide formed at the grain boundary after welding is greatly reduced, significantly reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion. Therefore, in welding structural parts or welding equipment that needs to be in a harsh corrosive environment for a long time, 304L steel performs better.

Mechanical properties

There are certain differences in mechanical properties between 304 steel and 304L steel. Since carbon elements have a strengthening effect on the strength of steel, the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of 304L steel are slightly lower than those of 304 steel due to its low carbon content.

Generally speaking, the tensile strength of 304 steel is about 515MPa and the yield strength is about 205MPa; while the tensile strength of 304L steel is about 485MPa and the yield strength is about 170MPa. This means that when subjected to external forces, 304 steel can withstand greater tension without deformation or fracture. In building structures, if stainless steel materials are needed to withstand large loads, 304 steel may be a more suitable choice.

However, although 304L steel has a slightly lower strength, it has better toughness. In some occasions where the material needs to have good impact resistance or cold deformation processing, 304L steel can adapt better and is not prone to cracking during processing.

The processing performance of steel is crucial to its application in actual production. In terms of hot processing, the hot processing temperature range of 304 steel and 304L steel is similar, but due to the lower strength of 304L steel, the required processing force is relatively small during hot processing, and it is easier to perform hot processing processes such as forging and hot rolling. However, in the cold processing process, due to its higher strength and hardness, 304 steel is relatively difficult to process in cold processing operations such as cold rolling and cold drawing, but the dimensional accuracy and surface quality after forming are easier to control, and higher strength cold processing products can be obtained. Although 304L steel is easy to process during cold processing, due to its low strength, the strength improvement of the material after cold processing is not as obvious as that of 304 steel. Therefore, 304 steel has more advantages when the strength requirements of the product after cold processing are high.

In addition, during welding processing, as mentioned earlier, 304L steel has a low carbon content, a low tendency to produce intergranular corrosion during welding, better welding performance, and is more suitable for various welding processes. This is one of the reasons why it is widely used in the manufacture of some large-scale welded structures.

Wide application of 304 steel

Based on its good comprehensive performance, 304 steel is widely used. In the field of architectural decoration, whether it is the facade decoration of high-rise buildings or indoor stair handrails and railings, 304 steel has become a commonly used material due to its beautiful appearance, good corrosion resistance and certain strength. In the food processing industry, 304 steel meets food hygiene standards, will not pollute food, and has good corrosion resistance. It can adapt to the acid and alkali environment during food processing, so it is widely used in food processing equipment, storage containers, etc. In the field of medical equipment, 304 steel also performs well, such as surgical instruments and nursing equipment in hospitals. It not only meets the requirements for hygiene and cleanliness, but also has sufficient strength and corrosion resistance to ensure the long-term and stable use of equipment.

304L steel plays an irreplaceable role in some specific fields with its unique properties. In the chemical industry, many chemical reaction processes are accompanied by the presence of strong corrosive media. The excellent corrosion resistance of 304L steel, especially the resistance to intergranular corrosion, makes it an ideal material for chemical reactors, pipelines and other equipment, which can ensure the safe operation of equipment in long-term harsh corrosion environments. In the field of marine engineering, the high salt content of seawater and the complex corrosion environment require extremely high corrosion resistance of materials. 304L steel can effectively resist the corrosion of seawater and is often used to manufacture structural components of offshore platforms, seawater desalination equipment, etc.

In addition, in the field of aerospace, the performance requirements for materials are extremely stringent. The low carbon content of 304L steel enables it to maintain good performance in welding and high temperature environments. Therefore, it is also used in the manufacture of some aerospace parts.

How should I choose?

Main considerations

How should we choose between 304 steel and 304L steel in practical applications?

First, consider the cost factor. Generally speaking, 304L steel has higher production process requirements and its cost is slightly higher than 304 steel. If the use scenario is sensitive to cost and the corrosion resistance requirements are not extremely demanding, 304 steel may be a more economical choice.

Then, performance requirements are the key. If the product needs to withstand large external forces and has high strength requirements, 304 steel is more suitable; if the product needs to be welded during processing, or is in a strong corrosive environment for a long time, especially an environment where intergranular corrosion may occur, 304L steel is a better choice.

Finally, pay attention to its use environment. In ordinary atmospheric environments and general industrial environments, 304 steel is sufficient; but in special corrosive environments such as chemical and marine environments, the advantages of 304L steel will be highlighted.

Conclusion:

Although 304 steel and 304L steel are similar in appearance, there are obvious differences in chemical composition, performance and application scenarios. Understanding these differences is crucial for us to correctly select and use steel in actual production and life. Only by accurately selecting suitable steel materials according to specific needs can we give full play to their advantages and achieve "double harvest" of economic and social benefits!
