Sand casting is the most traditional casting method. Due to its own characteristics (not limited by the shape, size, complexity and alloy type of parts, short production cycle and low cost), sand casting is still the most widely used casting method in casting production. The process of sand casting is as follows:
1. Drawing:
The traditional method is to obtain casting drawings and send them to the foundry. This process can be done during quotation. Nowadays, more and more customers and foundries use CAD instead.
2. Mold:
Mold shall be made according to the drawing requirements. Generally, wood molds can be used for single-piece production, plastic molds and metal molds can be made for mass production, and templates can be made for large-scale castings.
3. Sand mixing:
According to the requirements of sand mold manufacturing and different types of castings, qualified molding sand shall be prepared for molding.
4. Modeling (core making):
It includes molding (forming the cavity of the casting with molding sand), core making (forming the internal shape of the casting), and mold matching (putting the core into the cavity and closing the upper and lower sand boxes). Molding is the key link in casting.
5. Smelting:
Chemical composition shall be prepared according to the required metal composition, and appropriate melting furnace shall be selected to melt alloy materials to form qualified liquid metal (including qualified composition and qualified temperature)
6. Pouring:
Pour the qualified molten metal into the sand box equipped with the mold. The pouring stage is dangerous, so special attention should be paid.
7. Cleaning:
After pouring and the molten metal solidifying, remove the molding sand and knock off the gates and other accessories to form the required casting.
8. Machining and other treatment:
As per the requirements of different customers, we can do heat treatment, machining, surface treatment, and other additional NDT inspection.
