Plunger for hydraulic press

Oct 11, 2023

1. Definition of Plunger:

The plunger used in a hydraulic press refers to the key component used to transmit hydraulic capacity and force in hydraulic press.

The function of a plunger in a hydraulic press is to convert liquid power into mechanical motion and provide the required force and control. When the pressure in the hydraulic system increases, the hydraulic pressure drives the plunger to move along the inner wall of the cylinder. The plunger is connected to the load and converts hydraulic pressure into mechanical motion. Depending on the specific application, the plunger can generate linear, rotational, or composite motion.

2. The plunger used in the hydraulic press usually consists of the following parts:

Plunger Rod/Plunger Body: The plunger rod is a cylindrical rod-shaped component connected to external loads or other mechanical devices. The diameter and length of the plunger rod may vary depending on the design and application requirements of the hydraulic press.

Cylinder body: The cylinder body is the outer shell of the plunger, forming a closed chamber inside, in which hydraulic oil circulates. The cylinder body also bears hydraulic pressure, transferring it to the plunger.

Sealing device: The sealing device of the hydraulic plunger is very important to ensure that the liquid does not leak and provide the necessary sealing performance. Common sealing devices include O-rings, sealing rings, etc.

3. Working principle of plunger:

• Hydraulic system: The hydraulic system of a hydraulic press consists of a liquid (usually oil) and hydraulic components. The liquid is transported to the hydraulic cylinder through a pump.

• Plunger rod connected to load: The plunger rod of a hydraulic press is connected to the load. When hydraulic pressure acts on the plunger rod, it pushes or applies the required force to the load.

• Pressure transmission: When the liquid enters the hydraulic cylinder from the pump, it is compressed and generates pressure. According to Pascal's law, this pressure is uniformly transmitted to the plunger area within the entire hydraulic cylinder.

• Plunger movement: Due to hydraulic pressure, the plunger is subjected to outward force, causing the plunger rod to move together with the load. The diameter of the hydraulic plunger and the magnitude of hydraulic pressure determine the force generated.

• Control valve regulating hydraulic system: Hydraulic presses are usually equipped with control valves to regulate the flow and pressure of the hydraulic system. By adjusting the control valve, the speed, force, and direction of the hydraulic plunger can be controlled.

• Complete work tasks: According to specific application requirements, hydraulic presses provide the required force and movement through hydraulic plungers to complete pressure processing, punching, bending, stretching, and other operations on the working object.

4. Common Materials for Plungers Used in Hydraulic Press

The commonly used materials depend on the specific application requirements and working environment. The following are common materials:

Cast iron: Cast iron is a commonly used material with good strength and wear resistance, such as Chilled Cast Iron. It is widely used in some small and medium-sized hydraulic machinery.

Carbon steel: Carbon steel is a common material for hydraulic press plungers. It has excellent strength and rigidity, suitable for most applications under general working conditions.

Alloy steel: Alloy steel is also common in hydraulic presses, especially in high-pressure, high-temperature, or applications that require higher strength. Alloy steel can withstand greater pressure and provide higher wear and corrosion resistance.

Stainless steel: Stainless steel has good corrosion resistance and high stability against corrosive media such as oxidation and acid alkali. Therefore, in special environments such as food processing and medical equipment, stainless steel plungers are more common.

5. The production process of plunger usually includes the following steps:

• Material preparation: Select materials suitable for the manufacturing of hydraulic press plungers, such as cast iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, or stainless steel. According to the design requirements, cut the material into the required length and shape.

• Processing pre-treatment: Perform processing pre-treatment on materials, such as heat treatment, surface treatment, etc., to improve the strength, hardness, or corrosion resistance of the material.

• Forming processing: Use equipment such as machine tools, lathes, or CNC machines to shape and process the plunger. This includes operations such as turning, milling, drilling, and cutting to provide the plunger with the required shape and size.

• Smooth treatment: By grinding, polishing and other processes, the surface of the plunger is polished to improve surface quality and accuracy.

• Processing inner hole: Drilling, reaming, and other operations are carried out in the inner hole of the plunger to install seals and connect other components.

• Heat treatment: Heat treat the plunger as needed, such as quenching, tempering, etc., to enhance its hardness, strength, and wear resistance.

• Surface coating: The surface of the plunger can be coated, such as chrome plating, spraying, etc., to improve its corrosion resistance or reduce friction.

• Verification and testing: Verify and test the manufactured plunger to ensure that its size, shape, and function meet the design requirements.

• Assembly: Assemble the plunger with other components (such as seals, plunger rods, etc.) to form a complete hydraulic plunger device.

• Final inspection and testing: Conduct final inspection and testing on the assembled hydraulic plunger to ensure its quality and performance meet the requirements.

In the production process of hydraulic press plungers, Welong will strictly follow relevant standards and specifications to ensure that the quality and performance of the plungers meet design requirements and meet customer needs.
